    SUBMISSION DETAILS:
I am making a submission to Auckland Transport to request the prioritisation of the Glenvar Road upgrade and road realignment with East Coast Rd and Lonely Track Road. Our community has been waiting for over a decade for these upgrades while continuing to use a road that compromises the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The Long Bay area has been earmarked for residential expansion for over 20 years, yet the main access road has not been upgraded. The state of Glenvar Road is extremely poor with significant portions the road without footpaths or cycleways, and dotted with potholes. Pedestrians are not able to use the road and children are not able to get to school safely.

The intersection with East Coast Road and Lonely Track Road is one of the most dangerous intersections in the East Coast Bays. Lonely Track Road and Glenvar Road are not aligned causing a major safety hazard for drivers turning in and out of either road. The volume of motorists using this intersection has increased dramatically in the last few years due to the Long Bay housing development and an increase in visitors to the Regional Park. The lack of visibility at this intersection and increase in congestion is a recipe for disaster.

When the new Glenvar Ridge Road opens, it will funnel even more traffic and buses down from the Glenvar/East Coast Road intersection, exacerbating an already intolerable situation and significantly increasing safety risks, especially for children.

    Upgrading Glenvar Road will:

    • Improve the safety of all road users, especially children, cyclists and pedestrians,

    • Allow greater use of active transport modes,

    • Relieve congestion and travel unreliability associated with increasing housing, along with actively supporting the provision of housing as a city-wide goal,

    • Give children and parents choice in how to access their schools, and

    • Provide for access to the Long Bay Regional Park in a manner which is not only safe but appropriate for the status of the Park and its value to Auckland as a recreational asset.

    IN SUMMARY:
We seek that AT allocate the necessary funding for these upgrade and realignment works from 1 July 2018 as part of the Regional Land Transport Plan, allowing for completion as soon as possible.

The current situation simply cannot continue. This vital project should be a top priority for Auckland Transport.
